Haitians are saying thank you to America and the world for outpouring generosity
THANK YOU AMERICA Every single Haitian is saying: Thank you On a beautiful Tuesday morning in Port-au-Prince, under the usual, spectacular blue sky; people said good morning and au-revoir to their parents/love ones and out of the door they went. Some went to work, others to school, prayer meetings, or to their usual activities, not knowing they were saying their final goodbyes. French ballads, Kompa music, Hip-hop, Reggae music and some local news blasted the airwaves throughout the day. Markets were jam-packed, the streets were filled with gossipers, unemployed people, students, UN officials, tourists from everywhere, children playing soccer all over the city, life appeared to be normal in Haiti. Suddenly… just around 4:55 PM, their world came to an end on January 12, 2010. In a matter of thirty five seconds, the city of three million people was in ruins, well over 200.000 souls have departed, some are buried alive, over 300.000 people are injured, 1.5 million are homeless; the town that fifty thousand American citizens call home, was unexpectedly in shambles. The city that takes well over two hundred years to be built was destroyed, and its citizens screaming in agony, wondering: what just happened? Children are crying all over the place, elderly men and women are speechless, mothers and fathers are separated from their children, husbands are searching for their wives, and vice-versa. Despair, confusion, chaos, total mayhem fills the streets of a broken city. The beautiful sunshine, turns into a cloud all over the city, there were no rain in the forecast that day; it was a cloud of dust. The earth shook, and tens of thousands of huge buildings just cave in, burying thousands of men, women and children. Huge, magnificent hotels, historic landmarks that I grew up watching, superb church buildings, enormous department stores, massive school buildings, hundreds of acres of private homes were no more. American built cathedrals, hospitals, colossal government buildings, the beautiful United Nations building, the presidential palace and so many more well built office buildings have collapsed. Port-au-Prince and many surrounding cities, were in turmoil, as the entire world watched in amazement. From the four corners of the world, thanks to the television and the internet medias, cell phones videos/cameras and so on… people watch in disbelief what was happening in Haiti. Tears started running down their eyes, people started praying for the little children, I am glued in front of the television, my heart just sunk, I called my mother and my kids; I ran upstairs and told my wife to turn to CNN, she asked me: what just happened? We all sat and watch the news through the night, wondering, asking the usual questions; why? What more can a country take? Is Haiti forsaken? My blood pressure is already very high at that point, then a pounding headache will follow for the next three days. I’m heart broken, I lost my appetite and I’m sleep deprived, I’m ashamed and angry at the dreadful scenery. listening to the Haitian president mumbling didn’t give me any confidence at all, in fact, it makes my blood broil. I want to be right there along with the CNN crew, rescuing people, saving lives, making a difference; but I am two thousand miles away. The world, meanwhile is also wondering, asking what must they do? They are also suffering along with the Haitian people. Any real human being is deeply touched and troubled, by the magnitude of the devastation. Then, then…. As every one watches helplessly, president Barack Obama, took the lead. He announced that the United States of America is sending help right away to Port-au-Prince. Every Haitian felt a sense of relief at that point, I remember dropping to my knees, praying for the president and thanking God at that moment. On the same day of that tragedy; the USA did not hesitate to offer real assistance to its unfortunate neighbor. As Americans took a head start, many others will soon follow. We thank you America, for being the country that you are, we thank the president and his administration for being swift and decisive, thanks to all senators, congressman and congresswoman who do not waver into doing the right thing at the right time. We will never forget. We thank former president Clinton and our secretary of state Ms. Clinton for their undying support and love vis à vis Haiti. We thank every single American for their compassion and generosity toward us. We thank all the medias who worked relentlessly, to show the world the enormity of the situation. We thank all the CNN reporters, specially Dr. Sanja Gupta for being the only one that was concerned about saving lives. Thanks to Larry King, Thank you to Anderson cooper and his team for being on the site without delay, and pointing out to search and rescue teams, how every minute counts in those dire situations. Haitians the world over, thank you. We give thanks to thousands of missionaries workers, and countless charitable organizations stationed in the island for years, building orphanages, churches, feeding the needy, clothing the forgotten and sheltering the young and the old. You also, have tragically lost love ones while doing charity work in a country that is not your own; the Haitian people wants to thank you, and offer our heartfelt condolences. We thank every single celebrity, athlete, super star, movie star, businessman, clergyman, church congregation and every little child that give anything to ameliorate our pain during this horrific ordeal. When other big countries pledge one million dollars in donations, America pledges hundreds of millions. When other developed nations are sending twenty, fifty, a couple of hundreds volunteers to help us, America is sending tens of thousands. When others are sending a couple of planes, America is sending Aircraft carriers, Hospital ships, countless helicopters of all types, numerous mobile units and so on…. Thank you for restoring order at the broken airport, it could have been such a chaotic and treacherous situation, when the ill prepared Haitian government seemed overwhelmed, powerless, clueless and incompetent. Thanks for establishing order in the streets. We are grateful for every man and woman serving in the Armed Forces, who are always ready, happy and willing to serve. We thank every state in the union, who are on standby to send more volunteers if needed. We thank every loving American family who are giving little Haitian orphans a home, God bless your heart. Haitians are very strong and resilient, very intelligent and grateful. We value family, hard work and integrity. All Haitians are willing to grow, learn, prosper and make a difference in other people’s lives. Every Haitian is inspired for greatness, our kids are taught to be the best that they can be; every little Haitian boy or girl wants to be a doctor, a lawyer or an engineer when they grow up, they just need to be in a right environment. We thank you for being so compassionate, and taking our forgotten little children home with you again, I pray that you won’t be disappointed. We thank you for the voiceless, for those poor souls, whose remains littered the streets of Port-au-Prince. Those who are unable to read or write, thank you. Those who were starving and dying under the rubbles, thank you. If you hadn’t been there on time, it would have been a lot worse; without an airport, no seaport, no roads, no trucks, no fuel, no helicopters, no ambulances, no doctors and nurses, no fire trucks, no heavy equipments, no electricity, no power, no water, no foods, no communication, no program, no plans, no clues, no local government, no leaders to guide you around town, no one in charge, no security, no organizational skills, no…no…no…without you, it would have been like hell on earth. We thank you for giving the Haitian people a well deserving break, a new prospect at life, a glimmer of hope, for we are a people too; with body, spirit and soul. You gave us a breather once again. Let it be known, that Haitians, as a people would have done the same, if the situation were reverse. Our ancestors, as you know have fought for you, and with you, elbows to elbows, backs against backs during the revolutionary war, in Savannah Georgia. In the eighteen century when America was only a shadow of what it is today, thousands of freed slaves jammed small boats, crossed the threatening ocean and came willingly to help rescue you against British and French oppressors and lost their lives in the process. Haitian people would never hesitate to put their lives on the line to protect this country and its citizens, we have hundreds of young Haitians serving at home and abroad, in Iraq and Afghanistan right now. I know some in the Air Force piloting F-14s, some are in the US Navy, working in technology departments aboard submarines. I know many in the US armed forces, some are also policing the dangerous streets of New York, New Jersey, LA, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Chicago, Miami, Orlando, etc... Haitians just love this country. Because of your generosity, We have a chance at a new life, and because of the sacrifices you’re making today, the sun will shine on my homeland again. Your outpouring of love and compassion, once again shows the world that you are a Christian nation, Yes America is a Christian nation. In spite of the devil’s devotion to remove God and his word in the lives of our children, in every public place, in every government building, in every school; America remains a country that still stands on the indestructible rock of all ages, Jesus Christ, The Lord of lords. Yes, you show your faith through your works. You have demonstrated your love for God by loving others, that spirit to do good deeds, does not come from the deceiving devil, but from compassionate hearts of God’s loving, bible believing children of God. You make me even so much prouder of you. We thank you for being there, we thank you for not being a rich country that just sit there and looks the other way when other helpless human beings are dying unnecessarily. We thank you for being like a tree that produces good fruit, when expected; you have not cumbered the soil. We thank every American who goes beyond racial barriers, to lend a helping hand to people in distress, disregarding skin color and language barrier. You are your brother’s keeper. With you by our side, we will overcome this catastrophe and there will be a rebirth. The process of rebuilding, begins right now, it begins in my mind, and in the minds of many compatriots who long for a country where the government is not corrupt, where the leaders really love their own country and are fit to lead. Haitians dream of a new country freed of demons and zombies, whose citizens respect one another, appreciate and cherish those who have knowledge and wisdom. I pray that many lessons are going to be learned, many heart transplants are going to be performed by the Holy Spirit, many people are going to finally welcome God into their lives, and we will ultimately live, work, help each other in the spirit of unity. We thank you and put our trust in you during these trials. Haitians however, are making one earnest request to you America, and to all other charitable organizations who came to help us rebuild: Please for the love of God, DO NOT GIVE A SINGLE DIME to any of those unqualified clowns in the Haitian so called government, that has done nothing for more than 200 years to improve or impact the lives of its citizens. PLEASE DO NOT PLACE ANY AMOUNT OF MONEY IN THEIR CARE, they will pocket %99 as usual for themselves and their families, while the country and its people never see a difference. They have not earn the trust of the people in handling aids money. If they want to see a dollar or two, they will have to earn it; bring in foreign construction companies, to handle the process, put Haitian officials to work like everybody else, in the building of the infrastructure, in the erecting of new schools, new airports, new state of the arts, well equipped hospitals, new condominiums style apartments to shelter our lovely people. Government buildings, should be the last thing on the rebuilding list. And perhaps, maybe, Haiti can become once again, the jewel of the caribbean. Then, we will thank you even more. May God bless you, and may God bless the United States of America Rev. Henry Dorval Architect, Developper/Builder Associate pastor of: Deliverance Church of God, Lansdowne
